Let’s Talk About Sensory Integration therapy

“Sensory integration therapy” is gradually known and discussed among parents in recent years. But what exactly is sensory integration?

“Sensory integration” refers to the innate neurobiological process in our brain that helps “integrate” and “interpret” the sensory input we receive from the environment and guide us to “respond” accordingly.

For individuals who have “sensory integration dysfunction”, low background noise may sound thundering loud, or standing on a slightly uneven surface may feel like having motion sickness, etc. It can well be imagined how this could disrupt how a person perceives the surroundings, and further affect their quality of life and emotions.

Occupational therapists use activities and equipment to provide just-right-challenge for clients, help them learn to modulate or integrate sensory input better, and facilitate improvement in their ability to focus, regulate emotions, or coordinate. We also empower parents and teachers to help kids perform more effectively in everyday life by adjusting the environment or the activities they need to perform. IM OT Clinic has added some new sensory integration equipment to our inventory during the renovation period. We hope this will provide more options on therapy medium to clients who are struggling with tactile defensiveness, inattention, emotional.
